I have been self-employed for 32 years as a sole proprietor in the accounting industry.
I was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canadian, eh? I moved to California in 1981 where I raised five wonderfully independent children. I have always run a home based business and never had to pay a babysitter. What a blessing home offices are. I obtained my CPA designation while in
California. I moved to Nova Scotia in 1994 bringing my accounting business with me handling both American and Canadian taxes. The Canadian Charter of Accounts would not honour my American degree nor offer an equivalency exam. To obtain a Canadian degree, I would have to go back through college 4 years. I am much too rebellious to cave in to stupidity and have operated successfully despite. If “pedigrees” are more important to you than experience; best find an Accountant who wares a suit, has a fancy office and car and has a stuffy attitude. Go figure; the Canadian government is screaming for credentialed workers yet will not accept foreign degrees. I have a German Doctor, Canadian citizen, as a client driving a taxi cab for the same reason. How sad is this?
I am high spirited, down to earth, humorous, non passive and cannot resist a challenge.
I bring to Gold Star Accounting, my two specialties; conducting audits and corporate taxes. I have a photographic memory for tax codes and often refer to this as a diseased brain.
I have an advantage over Canadian Accountants in that what ever law the IRS passes Revenue Canada adopts within 3 to 4 years. What’s up with Revenue Canada this year……it’s no surprise to me!

Kim was a self-employed cement finisher for 28 years until he was lucky enough to marry me 10 years ago. His family has an Accounting background so I snagged him into the accounting business. Amanda and I refer to him as the better half of this business. No matter what is thrown our way Kim is calm and collective. Kim handles our construction client accounts and so much more. We work well together and take particular INTEREST IN our husband and wife partnership CLIENT's.
Kim continues to take classes each year, the next one scheduled is Succession Planning.
Amanda Acker: our greatest asset
Amanda has earned her degree in business administration with focus on Accounting.
She has been with Gold Star Accounting for two years. She provides our “grounding force”.
When things get stressed she bounces into work with her Eeyore slippers. Besides technical support she specializes in the trucking industry. Amanda earns gold stars for her excellence in customer service, dedication to clients and detailed bookkeeping
